News: India co-hosted the launch of OneSCD on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

About OneSCD

OneSCD is a Global Partnership to advance equity and transform Sickle Cell Care.
It is a multistakeholder and multisectoral global partnership established to coordinate existing efforts and support country-led action on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
Hosted by: It has been launched at high level event held during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
- It is hosted by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and co-hosted by India.
- The initiative brought together partners including the Government of Nigeria, WHO, UNICEF, Africa CDC, the World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Key Features
- It will bring together government leaders, UN agencies, health experts, civil society, and people with lived experience.
- The Partnership aims to:
  - Build global consensus and standardized targets for SCD and strengthen political commitment.
  - Support countries in integrating SCD into national health systems, including primary healthcare, Universal Health Coverage, NCD and maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health strategies.
  - Mobilize sustainable financing and partnerships to expand newborn screening, diagnosis, essential medicines, safe blood supplies, patient registries, health information systems, and comprehensive lifelong SCD care.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders affecting haemoglobin.
- Normal Cells are of Disc-shaped and flexible, allowing easy movement through blood vessels.
- In Sickle Cell Disease, Red blood cells become crescent or “sickle” shaped, causing them to be rigid and block blood flow.
- Blocked blood flow can lead to serious issues such as Stroke, Eye problems, Infections, Pain crises.
India has adopted a comprehensive approach to Sickle Cell Disease through the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission.
- It was launched in 2023 with the goal of eliminating Sickle Cell Disease as a public health problem by 2047.
