News: Sikkim will host a three-day river festival on the Rangeet River to promote sustainable angling, river conservation, tourism and community participation.
About Rangeet River
- The Rangeet, or Rangit River is the largest river in Sikkim.
- Origin: It originates from a glacier of Mount Kabru in the lower Kanchenjunga region.
- Course: It begins its course in the West Sikkim district and flows past Pelling, Legship and Jorethang before joining the Teesta.
- Boundary: During its final flow, the Rangeet forms the boundary between Sikkim and Darjeeling district of West Bengal.
- Tributary of: The river joins the Teesta River at Teesta Bazaar, on the periphery of West Bengal and Sikkim.
- Terrain: Its banks have thick forest cover, while some areas are used for terrace farming.
- Ecological Importance: Its mountain river system supports cold-water fisheries, provides irrigation and freshwater.
- Hydropower Projects: It supplies water for small hydropower projects.
- The Rangeet Dam has been built on the Rangeet River.
- It started operating in year 2000.
- It has a 60 MW capacity.
- It is a 45-metre-high concrete gravity structure with a length of 100 metres.
