News: Mumbai Port Authority declared Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal plastic-free on 2 October 2026 during Swachhata Abhiyan 2026.
About Jawahar Dweep

- The Jawahar Dweep is a restricted offshore island terminal in Mumbai Harbour.
- It lies in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai’s eastern waterfront, about 8.25 km northeast of the Gateway of India.
- It is historically known as Butcher Island.
- Ownership: It is owned and operated by the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA).
- It handles crude oil, LPG and petroleum products from ocean-going oil tankers.
- Geological Formation: The island has Deccan Traps basaltic bedrock.
- Island Formation: It is a submerged topographic high or continental island remnant within Mumbai’s estuarine harbour basin.
- Recent Achievement

- Jawahar Dweep has become the country’s first oil terminal to completely eliminate single-use plastics.
