  • The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) is a radio telescope built in 2017.
  • Location: It is located in British Columbia, Canada.
  • Objective: It was built to map the distribution of hydrogen gas in the early universe and study cosmic expansion and dark energy.
  • Working Mechanism:
    • Radio-wave collection: Its four massive parabolic antennas collect radio waves in the 400–800 MHz range.
    • Digital focusing: It has no moving parts.
      • It uses digital signal processing to focus incoming radio signals and determine their direction.
    • Data processing: A powerful correlator processes data at about 7 terabits per second.
    • Sky coverage: As Earth rotates, the telescope receives radio signals from half of the sky.
  • Key Features:
    • Hydrogen mapping: It maps the combined radio glow of hydrogen to study its distribution and clustering.
    • Independent observations: It can study dark energy using its own data without relying on other telescope results.
    • Other capability: It can detect and study Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) from distant galaxies.
