  • Location: The Ramappa temple is located in Palampet village of Venkatapur Mandal in Telangana’s Mulugu (old Warangal) district.
  • Other Name: It is also known as Rudreswara Temple and Ramalingeswara (Lord Siva) temple.
    • The temple is known as the Ramappa temple after the sculptor who executed the work in the temple for 40 years.
  • Patronage: The temple was built by Recherla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva.
  • Timeline: It was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire.
  • Status: In 2021, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Key Features
    • Kakatiya Architecture: The temple is a masterpiece of Kakatiya-era architecture.
      • It stands on a 6-feet-high star-shaped platform, with intricate carvings on its walls, pillars and ceilings.
    • Earthquake-Resistant Features: The foundation uses the sandbox technique, in which the foundation pit is filled with sand-lime, jaggery and karakkaya (black myrobalan fruit).
      • This mixture acts as a cushion during earthquakes.
      • The gopuram uses light bricks that reportedly float on water, making the structure lighter.
    • Building Materials: The temple has granite flooring and basalt pillars, which add to its distinctive architectural design.
      • The lower part of the temple is built with red sandstone, while the white gopuram is made of light bricks.
    • Historical Appreciation: Marco Polo is allegedly said to have described the temple as “the brightest star in the galaxy of temples.”
  • Threats: Heritage activists are opposing the proposed PVNR (Palavelli Venkata Narasimha Reddy) opencast coal mineat Venkatapur, fearing that it could pose a long-term threat to the Ramappa Temple and the adjacent Ramappa Lake.
