News: An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Harivansh is participating in the 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania from 5th to 9th October.

  • The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the global organisation of national parliaments.
  • It promotes peace, democracy and sustainable development through parliamentary dialogue.

    • Governing Council: It is the plenary policymaking body, with three representatives from each Member Parliament.
      • It establishes the annual programme and budget.
    • Executive Committee: It includes the President, 15 elected members, and representatives of women and young parliamentarians.
    • Standing Committees: Three Standing Committees assist the Assembly in its work.
  • Key Functions
    • It promotes dialogue and cooperation among national parliaments.
    • It works for peace and international security through parliamentary action.
    • It promotes democratic governance, institutions and values and works for human rights.
    • It promotes gender equality and youth participation in parliamentary processes.
    • It supports parliamentary action on sustainable development and climate action.
    • It provides a platform for discussion on artificial intelligence, critical minerals, maritime security, science and technology and the future of work.

About 153rd IPU Assembly

  • Venue and Date: The Assembly is being held in Tanzania from 5th to 9th October.
  • Indian Delegation: The delegation is led by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh.
  • Participation: Indian delegates are participating in discussions on democracy, human rights, peace, sustainable development, women’s participation, science and technology.
