News: Protests against surveys for a proposed mega hydropower project in Siang and Upper Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh sparked clashes.
About Siang River

- In the indigenous Adi language, Si means water and Ang means heart –translating to the “water of the river’s heart”.
- Origin: The Siang river begins as the Yarlung Tsangpo from glaciers in Tibet, near Mount Kailash.
- Entry into India: It enters Arunachal Pradesh near Gelling and Tuting in Upper Siang district.
- Indian Name: After entering Arunachal Pradesh, the river is known as the Siang.
- Confluence: It joins the Dibang and Lohit rivers at Sadiya in Assam to form the Brahmaputra.
- Tributaries: Its key tributaries include Siyom, Yamne, Simang, and Yargyap Chu.
- Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP): The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) is a planned mega-hydroelectric and flood-control project.
- It is planned near Geku village in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Capacity: It has an installed capacity of 11,000–11,200 MW.
- Reservoir: It will have a 280–300 m high structure and an estimated reservoir volume of 9 billion cubic metres.
