News: Scientists have identified a new seahorse species in Indian waters, resolving a long-standing confusion over the identity of spiny seahorses.
About Seahorse Species

- Seahorses are marine fish.
- They belong to the family Syngnathidae, which also includes pipefishes and seadragons.
- They belong to the genus Hippocampus.
- The name Hippocampus is derived from two Greek words: hippos, meaning ‘horse’, and kampos, meaning ‘sea monster’.
- Habitat: Seahorses inhabit marine ecosystems, including seagrass beds, mangroves, coral reefs and estuaries.
- Key Features of Seahorses
- Body Structure: Seahorses have a horse-shaped head, an upright body and a curled tail that helps them grip marine vegetation.
- Body Covering: They lack scales and have bony plates covering their bodies.
- Camouflage: They can change colour and adjust their body spines to blend with their surroundings.
- Reproduction: Males carry eggs in a pouch and give birth to live young, not females.
- Ecological Role: They act as predators in seagrass beds, mangroves, coral reefs and estuaries.
- Threats: Bottom trawling and accidental capture in fishing nets threaten seahorses.
- Illegal trade also puts pressure on their populations.
- Taxonomic Classification: The study identified three separate species:
- Hippocampus histrix
- Distribution: It is distributed in the Pacific Ocean.
- IUCN Status: It is classified as Vulnerable.
- Hippocampus jayakari
- Distribution: It is found in the Arabian region.
- Key Feature: It is a poorly known species.
- Its distribution boundary with Hippocampus amandavincentae requires further investigation.
- Hippocampus amandavincentae
- Distribution: It is distributed in the Indian Ocean, with evidence of its presence in Madagascar, Mozambique and the Seychelles.
- Key Features: It has a shorter snout, five spines on its crown and stronger spines along its trunk and tail.
- Genetic analysis revealed a 6–7% difference from the Pacific species.
- Its population remains unknown.
- Hippocampus histrix
