- Origin: It originates from Vellingiri hills in the Western Ghats of Coimbatore district.
- It is a sacred river in Hindu-Tamil history, originally known as the “Kanchi Nadi.”
- It was later renamed on the place where it meets the Cauvery river.
- Course of river: It flows through Coimbatore, Erode and Karur districts and finally joins the Cauvery River near Noyyal village.

- Catchment area: The catchment area of the river is 3.49 lakh hectares
- Tributary of: It is tributary of the Cauvery River.
- Tributaries: It has two main tributaries – Cheyyar River (Chadiaar River) and Kanchimanadhi river.
- The Noyyal watershed is connected with a series of 32 tanks, 14 major canals, 23 Anicuts and 55 check dams.
- Most of these check dams and Anicuts were constructed by the Chola Kings who ruled the region, in the 9th to 12th centuries, to augment irrigation and control floods downstream.
- Dams: Aathupalayam Dam and Orathuppalayam Dam are situated on the river.
- Concern: The River and its interconnected tanks are major sources of drinking water and irrigation but now, it is polluted due to industrial waste, sewage, and effluents from dyeing and bleaching units.
