News: The Chandigarh administration has allowed only certified green crackers during Diwali, following wider efforts to reduce firecracker pollution.
About Green Crackers

- Green crackers are low-emission firecrackers designed to reduce air and noise pollution compared with conventional firecrackers.
- Developed by: Scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) developed green crackers.
- Aim: They aim to reduce particulate matter (PM) and gaseous emissions while allowing safer celebrations.
- Composition:
- Chemical composition: Green crackers contain 29% aluminium, 28% potassium nitrate, 38% CSIR-NEERI’s proprietary material (Fe₂O₃) and 5% sulphur.
- Reduced chemicals: They use reduced quantities of certain raw materials and exclude chemicals such as barium nitrate, lithium, mercury, arsenic and cadmium.
- Key Features:
- Emission reduction: They offer a 30% reduction in particulate matter emissions and aim to reduce gaseous emissions by at least 10%.
- Lower chemical usage: They reduce alluminium usage by 14%, sulphur by 44% and potassium nitrate by 50%.
- Noise control: They are designed to produce noise levels below 125 decibels at 4 m.
- Identification: Certified crackers carry CSIR-NEERI and PESO logos and encrypted QR codes.
