Reliance Infrastructure Limited wins bid for greenfield airport in Rajkot for ₹ 648 crore

  1. Reliance Infrastructure has bagged a contract from the Airport Authority of India to build a recently approved Greenfield airport at Hirasar,in Rajkot district of Gujarat. It had applied for a tender under Engineering,Procurement and Construction(EPC) model.
  2. A greenfield airport is one which is not constrained by prior work.It is constructed on unused land where there is no need to remodel or demolish an existing structure. Demolishing or remodelling an existing airport to build a new one is called Brownfield airport.
  3. Under the EPC model, the cost is completely borne by the government.Government invites bids for engineering knowledge from the private players.Procurement of raw material and construction costs are also met by the government.
  4. The private sector’s participation is minimum and is limited to the provision of engineering expertise.A disadvantage of this model is high financial burden on the government.
