- India has opened its first specialised hydrotherapy treatment for elephants suffering from arthritis,joint pain and foot ailments.
- Hydrotherapy is a form of physical therapy that uses the therapeutic benefits of water to perform physical rehabilitation in animals.
- The treatment centre is situated on the banks of the Yamuna in Mathura near the Wildlife SOS’ Elephant Conservation and Care Centre (ECCC).
- It currently houses rescued elephants and is run in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and the NGO Wildlife SOS.
- The new hydrotherapy jumbo pool is 11-foot-deep and has 21 high pressure jet sprays that create water pressure that massage the elephants feet and body and help in increasing blood circulation.
- The hospital started in 2018 already offers state-of-the-art modern facilities including (a)wireless digital X-ray (b)laser treatment (c)dental X-ray (d)thermal imaging and (e)ultrasonography to treat injured,sick and geriatric elephants.
