News: UNESCO has advised the Government of India to strictly follow World Heritage Convention conservation guidelines for the proposed Aghanashini–Vedavathi river-linking project.

About Aghanashini River

  • Location: It is west flowing river in Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka.
  • Origin: It originates from Gadihalli (Sirsi) at an altitude of 676 m in the Western Ghats of Karnataka.
  • Course: It flows for nearly 117 km  before it joins Arabian Sea at Tadri, Karnataka.
  • Catchement area: It has a catchment area of 1449 sq.km spread across districts of Uttara Kannada and Shimoga (Sorba).
  • Tributaries: It includes Bakurhole, Donihalla, Chandika hole, Masti mane halla, Benne holé, Badala, Divalli, Santeguli, Hulidevara kodalu, etc.
  • Waterfall: It forms various water falls such as the Burude falls, Dabbe falls, Waate halla, Benne hole falls, Unchalli falls.
  • Estuary Formation: The Aghanashini Estuary is formed where the Aghanashini River meets the Arabian Sea in Karnataka.
    • It is a highly productive estuarine ecosystem and has been designated as a Ramsar Site.
  • Aghanashini–Vedavathi River Link Project: The Project is announced as part of the National Perspective Plan for inter-basin water transfer.
    • It seeks to divert surplus water from the Aghanashini River in Uttara Kannada district to the arid Chitradurga basin via network of pipelines and canals.
    • It prioritizes drought mitigation, agricultural enhancement, and drinking water supply in water-scarce regions.
    • It has also raised environmental concerns regarding ecological impacts on the Western Ghats.
