News:The Indian Army is considering a model called the “Tour of Duty” Scheme.

Facts:

  • Tour of Duty Scheme: It is a proposed voluntary service to allow civilians of the country to join the Indian Army for three years and serve as both officers or jawan in the army.
  • Currently, the only option apart from regular permanent commission into the armed forces is the short service commission.

Additional Facts:

  • Permanent Commission: It means an officer can serve the army till he/she retires.
  • Short service commission: One can serve for 10 years with options to either leave or opt for Permanent Commission or to opt for an extension of four more years of service.
