News: A new study of magnetic minerals in Bakhira Lake sediments over 25,000 years reveals how past climate changes affected rainfall, weathering, sediment transport, and lake processes in northern India.

  • Location: Bakhira Lake is located at Sant Kabir Nagar district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
    • It forms part of the Ghaghara-Rapti alluvial system.
  • It is one of the largest wetlands in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Formation: It is a perennial oxbow/floodplain wetland formed through the migration and subsequent cut-off of the Rapti River. 
  • Its floodplain–lacustrine setting favours the accumulation and preservation of sediments derived from both the lake and surrounding catchment.
  • Area: It is spread over 29 km².
  • Bird sanctuary: It was declared as a bird sanctuary in 1990.
  • Ramsar site: It was designated as a Ramsar Site in 2022. 
  • Fauna: In winter (November–January), birds from Tibet, China, Europe, and Siberia travel up to 5,000 km to the lake. 
    • It also supports over 30 fish species, mainly Labeo rohita and Chana sp.
  • Significance: It supports migratory and resident birds, fishing, farming, and local livelihoods.
