News: Indian astronomers and international collaborators have discovered a Blue Straggler Star during its formation, providing rare direct evidence of its origin.
About Blue Straggler Star

- Blue Straggler Star (BSS) is an unusually hot, bright, blue, and massive star found in old star clusters.
- Location: It is found in old star clusters, including globular and open clusters, as well as dwarf galaxies.
- Discovery: It was first discovered by Allan Sandage in 1952–53 in the globular cluster M3.
- Formation Mechanisms:
- Mass Transfer in a Binary System: Two stars orbit each other in a binary system.
- As one star becomes older, it expands and starts transferring its outer material to the other star.
- This transfer of matter makes the second star hotter, brighter, and more massive, turning it into a Blue Straggler Star.
- Stellar Collision or Merger: In crowded star clusters, two stars may collide or merge into a single star.
- The combined star becomes more massive and energetic, making it appear hotter, brighter, and younger than the other stars in the cluster.
- Mass Transfer in a Binary System: Two stars orbit each other in a binary system.
- Key Features
- Different Evolution: These stars follow a different evolutionary path from most other stars in the same cluster because they are rejuvenated after gaining additional mass.
- X-ray Evidence: Strong X-ray emission confirms that matter is currently being accreted by the Blue Straggler Star.
