News: India exported coffee worth Rs. 6,467 crores in the first five months of 2024-25, up 45% year-on –year.
1. India produces 2 major types of coffee: Arabica and Robusta.
2. Arabica has a higher market value due to its mild aromatic flavour.
3. Robusta is used in making various blends due to its strong flavour and accounts for 72% of the total production of Indian coffee.
4. India was the 5th largest exporter of coffee in the world, with a share of about 6% of global coffee exports in the year 2021-22.
5. Leading coffee producing states: Karnataka > Kerala > Tamil Nadu.
6. Coffee Board of India: It is a statutory organisation constituted under Coffee Act, 1942, functioning under the administrative control of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, GOI.
7. Headquartered in Bangalore, the board promotes activities in the areas of research, extension, development, market intelligence, external and internal promotion and welfare measures.
