News: Researchers from IISc Bengaluru and TCG-CREST identified a brain circuit linked to chemotherapy-induced cold allodynia in mice.
About Cold Allodynia

- Cold allodynia is a nerve-related condition in which even normal or mild cold temperatures can cause pain or distress.
- Symptoms: It may cause sharp, burning or shooting pain, tingling, and pins-and-needles sensations.
- It can also cause increased sensitivity to mild cold, including air conditioning, drafts, cold water, or cold objects.
- Common Cause:
- Chemotherapy: Oxaliplatin, a commonly used platinum-based chemotherapy drug, is a major cause of cold allodynia.
- Diabetes: Diabetes can damage peripheral nerves and may lead to cold allodynia.
- Viral infections: Viral infections can irritate nerves and cause persistent neuropathic pain.
- Injuries: Physical injuries can damage or irritate sensory nerves and may trigger nerve pain.
- Nutritional deficiencies: Lack of B vitamins, particularly Vitamin B12, can impair nerve health and may contribute to cold allodynia.
- Diagnosis: Healthcare providers assess the symptoms and may test responses to temperature, light touch, and vibration, along with laboratory tests or nerve studies when required.
- Treatment:
- Medicines: Pregabalin, gabapentin, and duloxetine target nerve pain pathways.
- Lidocaine and capsaicin creams may help desensitize skin receptors, while Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help when inflammation is also present.
- Lifestyle measures: Keeping the feet warm, avoiding cold triggers, gentle exercise, adequate B vitamins, and stress management may provide relief.
- Alternative therapies: Acupuncture may help some people by modulating pain signals, while Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) uses mild electrical currents to block pain pathways.
- Medicines: Pregabalin, gabapentin, and duloxetine target nerve pain pathways.
