The Cartagena protocol on biosafety , the first international regulatory framework for same transfer, handling and use of Living Modified Organisms (LMO) was negotiated under the aegis of the convention on Biological diversity (CBD). The first meeting of the parties (MOP-1) to the Cartagena protocol on biosafety was held in the year 2000. India has acceded the biosafety protocol on 17 January 2003.
