Here’s the 48th Edition of the EPIC Magazine!
The Focus Article of EPIC April 2024 covers the issue of Electoral Reforms and the Model Code of Conduct. The 2024 General Elections for the Lok Sabha are underway. This is the largest electoral exercise in the world, with almost 1 billion eligible voters (~968 million). The process of elections have come a long way since the First General Elections in 1952. The Election Commission of India has continuously introduced several innovations like the use of indelible ink, Voter ID Cards, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPATs to ensure that the process of elections remains transparent. The Model Code of Conduct has also evolved gradually that has helped in creating a level-playing field for free and fair elections. The process of transition from one Government to the next has always been peaceful and smooth indicating India transitioning into a mature democracy.
Yet, several challenges remain especially with respect to the violation of MCC. Low voter turnout has also been flagged as an issue after the first 3 rounds of voting. Nevertheless, the electoral reforms are an ongoing and improving process and should be able to address these challenges going ahead. We have covered both Electoral Reforms and MCC in detail.
