IAS topper, Smriti later pursued her interest in law and completed her post-graduation (LLB) in law from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.

Smriti Mishra’s family has been her pillar of strength throughout her journey.  

Her father Rajkumar Mishra serves as Deputy Superintendent of Police in Bareilly, and her mother Anita Mishra is a homemaker. 

Her brother, a practising lawyer in the Supreme Court, has also been a constant source of support.

Her hobbies and interests include doing Origami. She also has an interest in Salad Decoration and Freestyle dancing. 

When asked what she will try to focus on when allocated a cadre, Smriti said, “I aim to fulfill the task of financial independence of women and their skill development, access of technology for common people, controlling corruption in lower levels of administration, strengthening urban- local governance and imparting civic sense among the masses.“

She had previously taken the exam twice but had not succeeded. Although Smriti failed the UPSC prelims on her second attempt, she did not give up on her dream and determination to clear the exam and serve her country. 

In the ever-evolving landscape of preliminary examinations, success is no longer guaranteed by simplicity. This insight, as shared by Smriti, underscores the need for aspirants to adapt to the changing nature of these exams. Smriti’s approach to tackling the prelims exemplifies her dedication and strategic mindset. She wisely begins by addressing the low-hanging fruit, those easier questions in the examination, allowing her to secure early marks and build confidence.  

Moreover, her commitment to answer writing, even before clearing the UPSC preliminary stage, highlights the long-term perspective required for UPSC preparation. For Smriti, the foundation of effective answer writing includes consistent practice, solving past question papers, staying updated with current affairs, and meticulous note-taking.  

Notably, she draws inspiration from the wisdom of the 2021 topper, Shruti Sharma, by utilizing her notes and answer scripts. IAS topper, Smriti’s answer-writing strategy is comprehensive, incorporating content enrichment, multiple examples, fact citation for cross-application, and time management with a dedicated 30 minutes for each answer.  

Visual aids like diagrams and flowcharts, along with quotes and case studies, enhance her responses, particularly in the ethics examination. Smriti emphasizes the importance of maturity in answers, recognizing that they should reflect a depth of understanding and insight.

IAS topper, Smriti’s optional subject was Zoology. She chose the subject as she stood second in the university and is pretty good at it. “I was confident enough that I would do well, and I even began studying Zoology earlier than GS,” she added. 

“I made sure to make lots of notes as it helps during revision. It’s not just reading but jotting them down enhances your retention power,” Smriti said. 

Finally, in preparing for the UPSC interview, she employs a well-rounded approach by diligently reading two newspapers and creating comprehensive notes, highlighting her comprehensive and holistic approach to success in these competitive examinations. 

IAS topper, Smriti advises aspirants to be honest with their efforts. She says that this is an exam which requires a lot of patience. “Do not worry about the results, this will show with time because I have been in this journey for long,” she added.
