Background and Education of UPSC topper, Uma Harathi N 

Born in Nalgonda, Telangana, she completed her schooling from Narayana Junior College, Hyderabad. She is an alumnus of IIT Hyderabad, where she completed her B. Tech in Civil Engineering. After graduating, she started preparing for the UPSC exam. 

 

 

Uma Harathi N was the student of ForumIAS’s MGP 2022, Anthropology optional Augmented Test Series for Mains 2022-23 and Answer Writing Focus Group (AWFG) 2020 Programs.

Uma Harathi N’s family has been her pillar of strength throughout her journey.  

Her father is the Superintendent of Police in Telangana, and her mother is a homemaker. 

The 28-year-old said it was her father who motivated her towards UPSC civil services. “He kept telling me what a great platform it is – both as a career and a platform where I can do something meaningful,” she said.  

 

Personal Interests and Hobbies of UPSC topper, Uma Harathi N

She enjoys doing yoga and creating short videos on social issues in vernacular language aimed at government school children as part of NSS. She also stated that she is interested in education and women’s empowerment. 

Amid setbacks, Uma maintained her mental and emotional strength by engaging herself in hobbies such as cooking, playing badminton and spending time with her pet dog. 

She also loves to explore the why and how of Indian cuisine. 

Preparation Strategy of UPSC topper, Uma Harathi N

Uma, in a candid and inspiring message to young aspirants, emphasized the importance of embracing failure in UPSC preparation. She recounted her own journey, revealing that it took her five attempts to achieve her goal.  

“This was my fifth attempt. This has been a long process, and it was not easy. But it was a great journey. I learnt from my mistakes and discovered myself,” Uma said. 

Despite the challenges and setbacks she faced along the way, Uma described her experience as a great learning journey. She stressed that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for success, highlighting the crucial role of perseverance.  

UPSC Topper Uma advised aspiring candidates to take ownership of their process, understand the exam thoroughly, and develop their strategies UPSC syllabus. She emphasized the value of focused reading and extensive practice, recognizing that practice can make or break one’s chances in a competitive exam. “Do not read too much. Just read as much is needed and practise a lot. This is a competitive exam and practice makes or breaks everything. So, practise a lot, have your own strategy,” she added. 

Uma also shared that studying with friends had been beneficial, as several of them had successfully qualified in recent years. Additionally, she noted that changing her optional subject to anthropology in her fifth attempt had been a pivotal and ultimately successful decision.  

Through her story, Uma conveyed the message that failure is a stepping stone to success, and with dedication, self-discovery, and perseverance, one can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
