News: The United Nations Environment Programme has warned that the world will exceed the 1.5°C global warming limit, requiring urgent emission cuts.

About Emissions Gap Report

  • The Emissions Gap Report is an annual assessment that measures the gap between pledged emission cuts and pathways needed to meet the Paris Agreement temperature goals.
  • Published by: It is published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • Aim: It assesses progress towards the Paris Agreement temperature goals and identifies ways to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Emissions Gap Report 2026

  • 2026 Edition: The 17th edition is titled “The Point of Return”.
  • Key Findings:
    • Global GHG Emissions: Global greenhouse gas emissions reached 58.4 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2025, a slight decline from 2024.
    • Fossil Fuel Emissions: Despite the overall decline, CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels continued to rise in 2025.
    • Major Contributors: G20 members, excluding the African Union, accounted for 76% of global emissions.
    • Future Temperature Rise: If current policies continue, global warming could reach 2.8°C by the end of the century.
      • Even if countries fulfil their climate pledges, warming could reach 2.6°C.
    • 1.5°C Target: The chance of limiting warming to 1.5°C without or with limited overshoot is gone.
      • However, returning to this level by 2100 remains possible.
    • Required Emission Cuts: To follow the lowest possible 1.5°C overshoot pathway, global GHG emissions must decline by 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 69% by 2040, compared with 2025 levels.
  • Key Recommendations:
    • Cut Fossil Fuel Use: Governments should introduce policies that reduce fossil fuel consumption and deliver rapid, deep and sustained emission cuts.
    • Expand Renewable Energy: Countries should accelerate renewable energy expansion and improve energy efficiency.
    • Strengthen Climate Action: Governments should extend emission reduction targets to 2035 and 2040 and scale up successful climate policies.
    • Restore Temperature Limits: Countries should minimise the magnitude and duration of temperature overshoot and return to 1.5°C by 2100.
