News: The Energy Transition Index 2026 reported that India recorded one of the strongest improvements in global energy transition readiness.
About Energy Transition Index 2026

- The Energy Transition Index 2026 tracks energy transition progress across 120 countries by assessing current energy system performance and future readiness.
- Published by: The index is published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in collaboration with Accenture.
- Structure of the Index:
- Tracking Parameters: The index evaluates 120 countries using 44 indicators across two major pillars.
- Current System Performance: The index benchmarks national energy systems across the dimensions of security, sustainability, and equity.
- Transition Readiness: This pillar evaluates the enabling environment, including institutional frameworks, infrastructure, stable policies, and capital investment.
- Key Highlights:
- Top Performers: Nordic countries continued to lead the index. Sweden ranked first, followed by Finland in second place and Denmark in third place.
- Global Transition Challenges: Despite record global energy investment of USD 3.3 trillion, energy transition progress has slowed due to geopolitical tensions, infrastructure bottlenecks, and rising energy demand.
- Decline in Readiness: Global energy transition readiness declined for the first time in more than a decade, showing that investment alone is not sufficient to maintain momentum.
- India’s Performance:
- Ranking and Progress: India moved up two places to rank 70th and was among the strongest improvers in the Energy Transition Index 2026.
- Drivers of Improvement: India’s progress was supported by stronger transition readiness, major infrastructure gains, and improvements in equity, sustainability, and financial investment.
- Green Energy Strategy: The report identified renewable energy capacity expansion, grid expansion, and green hydrogen development as key parts of India’s infrastructure-led clean-energy strategy.
- The share of low-carbon jobs increased by 24 percent in 2024, while renewable energy jobs reached 1.3 million, with hydropower providing the largest source of employment.
