News: The World Health Organization will provide 70,000 Ervebo vaccine doses to the Democratic Republic of Congo during the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

  • Ervebo is an approved Ebola vaccine that has proved safe and effective against the Zaire strain of Ebola virus.
  • Manufactured by: It is manufactured by Merck.
  • Vaccine Type: It is a replication-competent, live, attenuated recombinant vaccine that uses vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) as a vector.
  • Working Mechanism: A small gene from the Ebola virus is added to the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) to create the vaccine virus.
    • Since it does not contain the whole Ebola virus, it cannot cause Ebola.
    • The vaccine virus acts like a natural infection and trains the immune system to recognise and fight the Ebola virus.
  • Administration: It is given as a single dose to individuals aged 12 months and above.
  • Limited Protection: ERVEBO does not provide protection against other species of orthoebolaviruses or orthomarburgviruses.
