About EVEREST Engine

EVEREST Engine
Source: Money Control
  • It is India’s first privately built 800 kN Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) LOX-Methane rocket engine.
  • Developed by: It has been developed by Astrobase Space Technologies.
    • It is a Bengaluru-based Indian space-tech startup.
  • Features:
    • It is described as India’s first full-flow staged combustion rocket engine, a propulsion technology known for its high performance and efficiency.
    • Engine category: The engine belongs to the 80-tonne thrust class, placing it in a category intended for powerful launch vehicle applications.
    • Technology: It works on a full-flow staged combustion engine designed around a complex propulsion architecture.
    • How it works: It routes both fuel and oxidiser through separate preburner systems before the propellants enter the main combustion chamber.
      • This approach can support high chamber pressures and efficient propellant use.
      • Limitation: It demands advanced engineering, materials and manufacturing capabilities.
    • Note: SpaceX is currently the only company to have flown an FFSC engine in an orbital rocket.
  • Application: If successfully tested and qualified, the indigenous 80-tonne-class FFSC engine could become an important component of future heavy-lift launch capabilities.
