News: Global Peace Index (GPI) 2026 indicates that global peacefulness has fallen to its lowest level since the index was first introduced.

- Global Peace Index (GPI) 2026 was recently released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
- Edition: It is the 20th edition of the GPI.
- Key findings:
- Top in ranking: The Global Peace Index 2026 has been released, with Iceland ranking as the world’s most peaceful country for the 18th consecutive year.
- Findings related to India: India has fallen to 127th place, largely due to rising cross-border tensions and persistent internal conflicts.
- Findings related to neighbouring country: Sri Lanka ranks 67th in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), securing the second position in South Asia and marking one of the most significant improvements in the region.
- Rising Global Instability: The report reveals that world struggling with the economic consequences of a record-high number of conflicts that are increasingly interconnected and difficult to resolve.
- This deterioration is driven by a profound geopolitical shift, characterized by the rising influence of middle powers and the waning strength of traditional European powers known as the “Great Fragmentation.”
- This is also accompanied by a rapid technological revolution in warfare that is leaving international law and diplomacy far behind.
- AI on the Battlefield: It also reveals that, for the first time in history, machines can make life-and-death combat decisions faster than humans can review them, and there are very few rules to control their use.”
- Drone Warfare Expansion: Drone attacks rose by over 11,500% between 2018 and 2025, while AI has compressed targeting times from one day to seconds.
- Historic Decline in Peace: Global peace is at its lowest level since the inception of the Index, while the conditions that precede conflict are the worst since WWII
- 99 countries witnessed a deterioration in peacefulness in the past year, the highest number since the inception of the Index 20 years ago.
- 119 countries are now less peaceful than in 2007.
- Surge in External Conflicts: The number of countries engaged in external conflict has nearly doubled from 59 in 2008 to 103 in the 2026 GPI.
- Record Conflict Deaths: Deaths from global conflict remain at historic highs, with over 181,000 killed in 2025, a six-fold increase since 2008.
- Economic Cost of Violence: The global economic impact of violence increased by 3.2% to US$21.81 trillion in 2025, equivalent to 10.5% of global GDP.
- Military Spending at Record Levels: Global military spending hit a record US$2.9 trillion in 2025, driven largely by Europe.
