About Gum Arabic

  • Gum arabic, also known as acacia gum, is a natural substance obtained from the hardened sap of two species of acacia trees—Acacia senegal and Vachellia (formerly Acacia).
  • It is predominantly produced in Sudan, which accounts for about 50% of the global supply, and is also harvested in other parts of Africa such as Kenya, Nigeria, Mali, and Senegal.
  • The gum is a complex mixture of glycoproteins (proteins with carbohydrate groups attached) and polysaccharides (carbohydrates made of sugar molecules linked together), which also include oligosaccharides.
  • Gum Arabic contains arabinose and ribose, which are natural sugars that were among the first concentrated sugars to be extracted from plants.
