News:Indian Navy will commission India’s second Scorpene-class submarine INS Khanderi on September 28,2019.
Facts:
About INS Khanderi:
- INS Khanderi is the second of six planned Scorpene-class submarines being built at Mazagon Dock Limited(MDL) under technology transfer from Naval Group of France as part of Project 75I.
- The submarine is named after Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji’s island fort Khanderi.
- The state-of-the-art features allow this Scorpene submarine to launch attacks on the enemy using precision-guided weapons.
- The submarine is designed to operate in all theatres including the tropics.It is equipped with all means and communication to ensure interoperability with other components of a naval task
- INS Khanderi is also capable of undertaking various types of missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.

Project 75I:
- The Project 75I-class submarine is a follow-on of the Project 75 Kalvari-class submarine for the Indian navy.
- Under it,six new-generation conventional diesel-electric submarines will be constructed.
- The Six Scorpene Class Submarines are (a)INS Kalvari (b)INS Khanderi (c)INS Karanj (d)INS Vela (e)INS Vagir and (f)INS Vagsheer.
- They will have advanced Air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems to enable them to stay submerged for longer duration and substantially increase their operational range.
- They will also feature advanced stealth capabilities such as a greater ability to suppress noise and acoustic signatures.
Progress of project:
- INS Kalvari was the first modern conventional submarine under this project to be inducted in service in December 2017.
- The third submarine is currently undergoing sea trials and the fourth is getting ready to be launched.The other two submarines are at various stages of outfitting and will be delivered by 2022.
