News: International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governor has adopted a resolution to order Iran to improve cooperation with the agency and to initiate Iran into fresh nuclear talks.

1. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organisation that aims to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, check the proliferation of nuclear weapons and enhance cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.

2. It is also tasked with key verification responsibilities under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, 1968.

3. It was established in 1957 by the United Nations and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

4. The genesis of IAEA can be traced US President Eisenhower’s ‘Atoms for Peace’ address to UN General Assembly in 1953.

5. The Board of Governor of the agency comprises of 35 member states and is responsible for overseeing the agency’s activities. It also appoints the Director General, who heads the IAEA.

6. Currently, 179 states are members of the IAEA.
