News: Union AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav announced that the main national event of International Day of Yoga 2026 will be held in Kolkata.
About International Day of Yoga 2026
- International Day of Yoga is a global observance that promotes awareness about the benefits of yoga for health and well-being.
- Origin: It began in 2014 after the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 21 June as the International Day of Yoga.
- The first International Day of Yoga was observed worldwide on 21 June 2015.
- Edition (2026): The year 2026 marks the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga.
- Host City: Kolkata has been selected to host the main national celebrations of International Day of Yoga 2026.
- Nodal Ministry: The Ministry of Ayush is the nodal ministry for the International Day of Yoga.
- Theme (2026): The theme for International Day of Yoga 2026 is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
- Objectives: The observance aims to promote yoga as a means of achieving physical fitness, mental well-being, holistic health, and healthy ageing.
- Key Aspects of International Day of Yoga 2026:
- Global Participation: More than 210 Indian missions abroad are organizing Yoga Day programmes at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide, reflecting growing global participation.
- Health and Wellness Focus: The theme highlights the role of yoga in helping people lead healthy, active, self-reliant, and mentally resilient lives as they age.
- Nationwide Outreach: The Ministry of Culture is organizing special events at 100 iconic and heritage sites to connect yoga traditions with India’s cultural legacy.
