News:
- Chief minister Raghubar Das has declared Jharkhand open defecation free (ODF) on its 18th statehood day. The state has achieved its target a year ahead of the ODF deadline.
Important Facts:
- The state has constructed of more than 33 lakh toilets in rural Jharkhand against the requirement of 40 lakh in the past four years.
- On October 2, 2017, the Jharkhand government declared its civic bodies, including that of Ranchi, ODF by building more than 2.10 lakh toilets against the target of 2.09 lakh.
- Earlier picture:
- Toilet coverage in Jharkhand was around 16% till 2012.
- According to the baseline survey 2012, there were more than 4o lakh households in Jharkhand, while the number of toilets were only around 2 lakh.
- Jharkhand has got the first position in the country for cleanliness in the cleanliness survey 2018.
- With coordinated effort, more than 9 lakh toilets were built in the financial year 2017-2018 to achieve the feat.
- The highest number of toilets was built in Giridih (2,65,193), followed by Ranchi (2,37,336) and Palamu (2,21,444).
- Sakhi Mandals and Rani Mistry: This is one of the best practices bought out by the Jharkhand government where Rani Mistry has been made in place of the Masons by training women in the state.
- These Rani Mistries have played an important role in the construction of toilets in the state and has been given the status of Queen Mistry.
- This concept of Rani Mistry has been appreciated by the Central Government and it is being followed by various states, which is a matter of pride for Jharkhand.
