News: India successfully tested the nuclear-capable K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile from the newly commissioned, nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat.
About K-4 Ballistic Missile
1. It is a nuclear capable, solid-fuelled, submarine-launched ballistic missile.
2. It is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
3. It has a range of 3,500 kilometers.
4. Significance– It adds another layer of strength to India’s nuclear triad, which includes land-based missiles, air-launched nuclear weapons, and submarine-launched platforms.
About INS Arighaat
1. It is India’s second indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).
2. It is the successor of India’s first nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arihant.
3. It was commissioned in August 2024.
4. It can carry up to 12 K-15 Sagarika submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), each with a range of 750 kilometres (km), or four K-4 SLBMs with a range of 3,500 km.
5. INS Arighat has a displacement of around 6,000 tonnes.
