News: An ongoing research project is studying the Kashmir flycatcher in the North-Western Himalayas, including its migration and ecology.
About Kashmir Flycatcher
- Kashmir Flycatcher is a small migratory bird of the flycatcher family Muscicapidae.
- Scientific Name: Ficedula subrubra
- Habitat: It prefers mature temperate broad-leaved forests with dense canopy and understorey.
- It is found at 1,800–2,700 m above sea level.
- Distribution: It returns to Kashmir to breed and spends the non-breeding season in the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka.
- It is endemic to the Indian subcontinent.
- Characteristics:
- Size: It is about 13 cm long and barely larger than a sparrow.
- Sexual Dimorphism: Males have an orange-red throat and breast,
- while females and young birds are browner with lighter underparts.
- Diet: It feeds mainly on flying and foliage-dwelling insects during breeding.
- Behaviour: Males defend territories by singing and displaying.
- Both parents feed nestlings.
- Threats:
- Forest loss and degradation,
- Timber extraction,
- Fuelwood collection
- Infrastructure development
- Tourism
- Human disturbance
- Conservation Status
- IUCN Red List: Vulnerable
