News: Six states signed a Memorandum of Understanding, to pave the way for the long-pending 422 MW Kishau Multipurpose Project.
About Kishau Multipurpose Project
- The Kishau Multipurpose Project is an inter-state hydropower and water-storage project on the Tons River.
- Location: The project site lies on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
- Aim: The project aims to generate hydropower, create irrigation potential, and provide drinking and industrial water to the beneficiary states.
- Participating States: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are the participating states.
- Funding Pattern: The Central Government will bear 90% of the water component cost, while the remaining 10% will be shared by the six states.
- Key Features
- Dam: The project envisages a 232.6-metre-high concrete gravity dam.
- Power Generation: It will have an installed capacity of 422 MW and is expected to generate 1,476 million units of clean hydropower.
- Water Storage: The project will have a storage capacity of 1,786 MCM, with 1,324 MCM expected to be actually stored.
- Irrigation and Water Supply: It is expected to create irrigation potential of about 97,076 hectares and provide drinking and industrial water to beneficiary states.
About Tons River
- Origin: The Tons river originates from the Bandarpunch Mountain (6,315 m) in Uttarakhand.
- Natural Boundary: The Tons forms a natural boundary between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh in the Jaunsar region.
- Course: It flows through the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, touches Himachal Pradesh.
- It has a length of about 200 km.
- It is the perennial rivers emerging from the Himalayas.
- Terrain: It flows through deep gorges, tranquil valleys and dense forests.
- Tributaries: The Pabbar and Asan rivers are its main tributaries.
- Confluence: The river joins the Yamuna near Kalsi in Dehradun district, Uttarakhand.
