News: Nearly 2,000 Korku community members from 150 villages marched in Madhya Pradesh demanding removal of forest encroachments and protection of livelihoods.
About Korku Community

- The Korku are an ancient, peaceful Adivasi community belonging to the Munda group and recognized as a Scheduled Tribe by the Government of India.
- Distribution: The Korku community is mostly found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the adjoining Melghat region of Maharashtra.
- Key Characteristics of Korku Community:
- Language: The Korku community speaks the Korku language, which is an endangered Austroasiatic Munda language generally written in the Devanagari script.
- Traditional Self-Governance: The Korku community follows a traditional self-governance system known as Chavadi Swashasan.
- Village Administration: Village affairs are managed through the Korku Panchayat, which is headed by a Patel and assisted by the Padihar, Kotwar, and respected elders.
- Agriculture and Livelihood: The Korkus are primarily cultivators who practise seasonal double-cropping.
- Their livelihoods also depend on forest produce such as mahua, chironji, tendu leaves, and medicinal plants.
- Ancestor Worship: The Korku community regards its dead as gods and commemorates them by installing memorial pillars called Munda.
- Traditional Dance: The community performs the traditional Gadli dance during cultural occasions.
- Community Conservation: During Hari and Jitori festivals, the Korkus undertake tree planting to protect forests and strengthen food security.
