News: More than 1,000 minor earthquakes have revealed the presence of a deep, inclined magma reservoir beneath Germany’s Lake Laach volcano.
About Lake Laach
- Location: It is a volcanic caldera lake located in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
- It is also known as Laacher See.
- Its water is blue in colour, very cold and bitter to the taste.
- It has no natural outlet.
- Area: It covers an area of approximately 3.3 km² and has a maximum depth of about 53 m.
- Formation: It was formed in the caldera of a volcano that erupted around 13,000 years ago.
- It is part of the East Eifel volcanic field, which forms a section of the larger Volcanic Eifel region in western Germany.
- Traces of volcanic activity can still be found in the form of volcanic outgassing, the so-called mofettes, on the eastern shore of the lake.
- These mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake.
