News: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan paid tribute to Maveeran Ondiveeran on his death anniversary and recalled his valour and sacrifice against colonial rule.

  • Maveeran Ondiveeran, also known as Ondi Veeran, was a warrior from Tamil Nadu who fought against the British East India Company.
  • Naming: The word “Ondi” means single-handedly, while “Veeran” means brave warrior.
    • He earned the name Ondiveeran because he single-handedly fought against the enemy and emerged victorious.
  • Earlier Life: He came from the Arunthathiyar community, which considers him a hero.
    • His grandfather owned cultivable land that was retrieved by Puli Thevar from Irulappillai.
  • Role in Puli Thevar’s Army: He was a trusted commander in Puli Thevar’s army.
    • He was also known as the “Porvaal” or sword of Puli Thevar.
  • Military Skills: He developed unique strategies for different battles and was an expert in guerrilla warfare.
  • Continued Resistance: Oral traditions and folk tales state that, after Puli Thevar’s martyrdom, Ondiveeran served in the army of Puli Thevar’s sons and fought against their enemies.
    • However, no concrete records regarding this are available.
  • Legacy and Commemoration: In honour of Maveeran Ondiveeran, a Mani Mandapam (Memorial Hall) was inaugurated at Palayamkottai on 1 March 2016, and a commemorative postal stamp was released on 20 August 2022.
