News: India’s four Gaganyaan astronauts began Mission MITRA, which is a high-altitude test in Ladakh.
About Mission MITRA

- Mission MITRA stands for Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment.
- It is a first-of-its-kind team behavioural study to examine the physiological, psychological, and operational dynamics of Crew and ground teams functioning in a high-altitude environment.
- Aim: The primary aim of the Mission MITRA is to study how the crew members communicate amid stressful working conditions, which include communication, dealing with conflicts, taking up leadership positions, and making decisions.
- Led by: It is led by ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre.
- Designed by: It is designed by ISRO & IAF-Institute of Aerospace Medicine.
- Testing site: It will be conducted at Leh, Ladakh.
- This place is chosen as it is about 3,500 m above mean sea level and naturally offers a certain space-like environment, including hypoxia, coldness, and isolation.
- How it will be conducted: The participants are put in environments where the presence of thin air, cold, and isolation mirrors the experience of actual space flight.
- Such analog missions conducted under controlled yet realistic conditions are utilised to understand how the gaganyatris perform under challenging conditions.
- Significance: The information gathered in this experiment is expected to be used to prepare for future flights.
- It will also help create guidelines related to crew interaction and survival.
