PIB Must Read 28/Aug/17

1. 28th August = PMJDY Completes 3 yrs >>

Its flagship programme of GoI for Financial inclusion (FI) (4 pillars of FI -> Banking, Investment, Insurance, Credit). Vision of this programme is to end financial, economic, digital & social exclusion faced by poor. As per status in mid August – 29.5 crore accounts has been opened under PMJDY & more than 50% belongs to rural India. Data also shows sizable and rapid FI of women. Balance in those account has shot up to 65000 crore (average balance is 3 times as compared to 2015) — though critically, demonetisation has led to large influx of cash deposits in PMJDY accounts

Conceptually PMJDY has created a network, an “infrastructure” which can be exploited for developmental purposes. For example PM Mudra Yojna – Money going directly to bank accounts. JAM which brings together FI(PMJDY) + Biometric ID (Aadhaar) + Mobile Telecom is nothing short of social revolution. 52.4 Crore Unique Aadhaar has been linked to 73.62 Crore accounts. And now with BHIM (can also run offline) and UPI (only online) – JAM can become fully operational. Just like GST which aims for “One TAX, oNE mARKET, One India”, JAM also envisions “One Common Financial, economic and digital space”
