News: Researchers discovered two new rare solitary bee species in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang Valley, highlighting Eastern Himalayas’ biodiversity and conservation needs.
About New Species of Bees

- Elaphropoda Triangulata and Habropoda Adi are two newly discovered species of solitary bees found in Arunachal Pradesh.
- Discovered by: Researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru, discovered these species.
- Naming: Elaphropoda Triangulata was named after the triangular markings on its abdomen.
- Habropoda Adi was named in honour of the Adi indigenous community of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Scientific importance: Each species is currently known from only one male specimen, making the discovery important, and researchers have called for more surveys to study their distribution, ecology, and conservation status.
- Habitat and behaviour: These species belong to the bee subfamily Anthophorinae, which mainly consists of ground-nesting solitary bees.
- Unlike honeybees, they do not live in colonies and usually nest alone.
- Ecological role: Solitary bees are important pollinators because they help maintain healthy ecosystems and support agriculture.
- Conservation concern: Habitat loss, infrastructure development, and other human activities could threaten these species, making the conservation of forests and natural habitats in the Eastern Himalayas essential.
