  • Elaphropoda Triangulata and Habropoda Adi are two newly discovered species of solitary bees found in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Discovered by: Researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru, discovered these species.
  • Naming: Elaphropoda Triangulata was named after the triangular markings on its abdomen.
    • Habropoda Adi was named in honour of the Adi indigenous community of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Scientific importance: Each species is currently known from only one male specimen, making the discovery important, and researchers have called for more surveys to study their distribution, ecology, and conservation status.
  • Habitat and behaviour: These species belong to the bee subfamily Anthophorinae, which mainly consists of ground-nesting solitary bees.
    • Unlike honeybees, they do not live in colonies and usually nest alone.
  • Ecological role: Solitary bees are important pollinators because they help maintain healthy ecosystems and support agriculture.
  • Conservation concern: Habitat loss, infrastructure development, and other human activities could threaten these species, making the conservation of forests and natural habitats in the Eastern Himalayas essential.
