News: The population of Nilgiri Tahr has risen from 568 in 2018 to 612 in 2019 in the Mukurthi National Park.

About Nilgiri Tahr:

  • Description: Nilgiri Tahr, also known as Nilgiri Ibex, are stocky goats with short, coarse fur, bristly mane and curved horns.
  • Habitat: Inhabits the open montane grassland habitats. They are endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
  • Conservation Status:
    • Listed as Endangered in IUCN Red List
    • Listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
