- Amidst allegations of delaying the release of NSSO report on employment, the Central government has reported to the Parliament that there is no data available on unemployment post-demonetization.
- Labour Bureaus’ surveys on unemployment for which the latest data available is pre-demonetization, pegs unemployment rate at 3.7% in 2015-16
- Sources of labour statistics include: a) Ministry of Labour and Employment, through Labour Bureau, b) Ministry of Statistics and Programme through the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), c) Census of India which collects data on workforce every 10 years and d) state governments which collect data through labour departments.
- The Ministry of Statistics and Programme and Implementation had launched Periodic Labour Force Survey in 2017 which seeks to generate quarterly reports on Labour Force Indicators such as Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR) and Unemployment Rate (UR) in urban areas and an annual report for rural India
- Labour force participation rate is defined as the section of working population in the age group of 16-64 in the economy currently employed or seeking employment
- Unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of unemployment and it is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force.
