News: Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay, a South African jurist of Indian origin and a former ICC judge ‌won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

  • Nobel Peace Prize 2026 was awarded to Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law.
  • She has been honoured for her lifelong commitment to upholding international law, protecting human rights, and promoting justice against apartheid.
    • She became the first woman to practise law in Natal Province and the first Black woman to serve on South Africa’s High Court.
  • Birth: She was born in 1941 into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa.
    • Her parents are Narrainsamy Naidoo and Santhama Naidoo.
  • Education: She studied law at the University of Natal and later attained a Master’s and Doctorate from Harvard.
  • Contributions:
    • She started her human rights work during the apartheid era and became the first non-white woman to build her own law practice.
    • She was then appointed as a High Court Judge in South Africa.
    • In 1967, she set up a practice in South Africa’s Natal Province, becoming the first woman to do so.
    • UN General Assembly appointed her as judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda after she defended several opponents of apartheid.
    • She also serve as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC).
    • From 2008 to 2014, she held the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
    • She also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025, and in 2019.
  • Currently, she is a judge on the International Court of Justice in a case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.

  • The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the six Nobel Prizes established through the will of Alfred Nobel (1895).
  • It is awarded to people or organisations, who do the most to promote world peace, build ties between nations, and reduce armed forces.
  • It is awarded annually since 1901.
  • It is awarded in Oslo, Norway and decided by Norwegian Nobel Committee .
  • Prize: It includes a gold medal, diploma and 11 million Swedish kronor.
  • India has two Nobel Peace Prize laureates namely Mother Teresa (1979) and Kailash Satyarthi (2014).
