About Nuclear Mission

  • The “Nuclear Mission” marks a historic shift in India’s energy policy, enabling nuclear power to emerge as a major energy source
  • This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to energy security, self-sufficiency, and sustainability, aiming to position the country as a global leader in advanced nuclear technology by 2047.
  • The mission aims to:
    • Enhance domestic nuclear capabilities.
    • Promote private sector participation.
    • Deploy advanced nuclear technologies for clean and sustainable energy.
  • The Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat will accelerate nuclear power generation, strengthening India’s long-term energy security goals.
  • The Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat is poised to:
    • Bolster India’s energy security.
    • Reduce carbon emissions and ensure sustainability.
    • Position India as a global leader in nuclear technology by 2047.
Expansion of Nuclear Power Capacity

  • Current capacity: 8,180 MW.
  • Projected capacity by 2031-32: 22,480 MW.
  • Reactors under construction: Ten reactors in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Upcoming projects:
    • Ten more reactors in planning stages.
    • Major 6 x 1208 MW nuclear power plant at Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with the USA.
