News: Western Europe is facing a severe heatwave, and the Omega Block or heat dome effect has trapped hot air over the region.
About Omega Block

- Omega Block is an atmospheric weather pattern in which a high-pressure area remains between two low-pressure zones and traps warm air.
- Naming: It is called the Omega Block because the wind flow forms a pattern similar to the Greek letter Ω (Omega).
- Distribution: Omega Blocks occur mainly in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, where the jet stream shows large bends.
- Mechanism of Formation:
- Jet Stream Disruption: Jet streams normally blow continuously from west to east and carry weather systems across Europe. When these winds slow down and their path bends into large loops, they form a pattern resembling the Greek letter Ω (Omega).
- High-Pressure Block Formation: This Omega-shaped pattern creates a high-pressure zone between two low-pressure zones, forming an atmospheric block that remains nearly stationary.
- Heat Dome Development: The high-pressure zone acts like a lid over the land.
- Warm air rising from the ground cannot escape into the upper atmosphere and becomes trapped near the surface.
- This trapped high-pressure system is also called a Heat Dome.
- Continuous Heating: As the trapped air sinks, it becomes compressed and warmer.
- At the same time, the high-pressure system suppresses cloud formation, allowing prolonged sunshine and causing temperatures to rise continuously.
- Impact on Weather Conditions:
- High-Pressure Region: The region under the high-pressure area experiences prolonged hot, dry, and settled weather with intense heat.
- Low-Pressure Regions: The regions under the two low-pressure areas receive abundant rainfall because weather fronts carrying moisture are diverted around the high-pressure block.
- Cause: Climate change has warmed the baseline temperature and may slow the jet stream, making Omega Blocks more intense and longer-lasting.
- Impacts: The Omega Block has caused severe heatwaves, widespread disruption, power outages, extreme heat alerts, and loss of lives across Western Europe.
