Oysters, a global delicacy, may soon help fight pollution
News:
- Oysters can serve as early warning givers on pollution in the ocean.
Important Facts:
- Oysters are attached to rocks or other supports in the ocean and are ideal for real-time analysis as they notice the surrounding noises, temperature and light variations.
- Oysters stationed near offshore oil platforms can detect minute amounts of hydrocarbons as they constantly filter water and react instantly to the slightest amount of oil.
- That could alert scientists to tiny infrastructure cracks before they become catastrophic oil spills that threaten wildlife and coastal communities.
- The observations have been tested in Barents Sea off Norway and Russia and Bay of Arcachon in France.
