News: Department of Rural Development (DoRD) and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) signed a MoU to create and support a community-based outreach mechanism of ‘Pension Sakhis’ across rural India.

  • Pension Sakhis are a new community-based network which will work as trusted community-level facilitators to take pension awareness and retirement planning closer to rural households, particularly reaching SHG members, rural women, Lakhpati Didis and other rural participants.
  • Nodal Department: This is an initiative of Department of Rural Development (DoRD) and the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
  • Focus: The focus is on enrolment, financial awareness and informed decision-making.
  • Features:
    • Network Integration: The initiative seeks to leverage the extensive community institutional network created under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), including its Banking Correspondent (BC) Sakhis and other trained community resource persons.
    • It will use women-led SHGs to help reach households that have limited access to financial advice and pension-planning services.
    • It will support households with information on pension and retirement planning at doorsteps, facilitate enrolment, and provide assistance in understanding pension-related services.
    • It will improve awareness and adoption of pension products, including the National Pension System (NPS).
    • Monitoring and tracking:  Digital dashboards, mobile and web-based solutions, and unique identifier-based tracking through Central Recordkeeping Agencies will support the monitoring of outreach, enrolment and the performance of Pension Sakhis.
