Why in the News?

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate in urban areas of the country has decreased from 7.2% in July-September 2022 to 6.6% in July–September 2023.

What are the Key Findings of the PLFS?

1) The unemployment rate (UR) for persons of age 15 years and above was 6.6% in July–September 2023. For men, the UR was 6% while for women, it was 8.6%.

2) The labour force participation rate (LFPR) in urban areas increased to 49.3% in July– September 2023 for persons aged 15 years and above. While for males, LFPR increased to 73.8%, for females, LFPR increased to 24.0%.

Note:
1) Unemployment Rate- It refers to the percentage of persons unemployed among the persons in the labour force.
2) Labour Force Participation Rate- It is the percentage of persons in the labour force (i.e. working or seeking or available for work) in the population.

1) Current Weekly Status- The activity status determined on the basis of a reference period of last 7 days preceding the date of survey.
2) Usual Status- The activity status determined on the basis of a reference period of last 365 days preceding the date of survey
