News: At least 15 Indian tourists were killed and 17 others were injured after a speedboat capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island.
About Phu Quoc Island

- Phu Quoc Island is Vietnam’s largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand and known for its white-sand beaches and nature-based tourism.
- It is also known as Pearl Island,
- Strategic Islands: The island lies closer to Cambodia than mainland Vietnam, making it one of Vietnam’s most geographically strategic islands.
- Shape: The island has a teardrop shape and is also described as roughly triangular.
- Size: The main island covers 567 sq. km., extends about 49 km in length, and forms part of an archipelago of 22 islands.
- Topography:
- A mountainous ridge called “99 Peaks” runs across the island.
- The island is known for its white-sand beaches.
- Highest Point: The Mount Chua is the island’s highest point (630 m).
- Biodiversity: A large part of the island is protected under Phu Quoc National Park, which is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
